These Irish Gallowglass figures look pretty good and at a reasonable price - lets see if this one gets to its funding target

US v the Taliban in Switzerland
My company's head office is in Basel, Switzerland and I get over there occasionally for meetings and courses. Some time ago I managed to track down a fellow wargamer over there and whenever I get the chance I call over for a game.
Just such an opportunity presented itself a few days ago. I flew over on the Sunday afternoon and as well as enjoying excellent hospitality from Mick and his family we managed to get in a couple of games of Force on Force.
Mick has a good selection of US, UK and Taliban figures. We set up a scenario where the US forces had to cross a river, go through a small village and clear a compound. We used reinforcement tables from one of the books.
In the first game I took the US forces and did a lot of damage to the Taliban, advancing half my forces over the river and was making good progress when substantial Taliban forces arrived in support. I kept taking them down but they kept advancing and in the end numbers told.
We reran the game taking opposing forces. I got a lucky deployment (Taliban deployment was random between the buildings) dominating the river and the US troops took early casualties. Despite a Fog of War card providing a British Jackal as a reinforcement all it could realistically do was cover the withdrawal of the survivors.
Balancing a Force on Force scenario is quite difficult. At the start of the first game the Taliban were going down like flies and it seemed unbalanced in favour of the US, but for the second half of the game and all the second game it seemed virtually impossible for the US's troop superiority to offset the numerical advantage of the Talban. Initiative was a key factor, once the US lost it in the first game they advanced no further- in the second game the Taliban held it virtually all game.
Still very enjoyable though
Unfortunately I am having problems downloading pictures again so sorry no photos

Not been blogging much
I will try to write up an account of a couple of recent games of Force on Force by the end of the week.
There is another club trip organised to Vapnartak on the 2nd February so I will take a few photos and do a report from there as well.

Looking Forward to 2014
In wargaming terms 2013 will be difficult to beat, so my
overall aim is simply to play as many games as I can and keep the variety of
rules, venues and opponents as high as possible. I also want to get more painted figures completed
and on the table.
There are a few specific new things
Play at
least a couple of games of Bloody Barons
Play
some games of Check Your 6! in particular Mers el Kebir and perhaps Guadalcanal
Get my
Indonesian Confrontation game on the table
Finish
the Paraguayan War figures and get a game
Complete
my SF force and get a game of some sort
Half the fun is getting involved in other people’s projects
such as the proposed WW2 naval campaign and Purple Heart Valley over Japan
(think superfortresses)
Of the ongoing stuff both the Longstreet and Mordhiem
campaigns will continue and come to a climax in 2014 which will be good. I will also probably take part in the Scottish Impetus circuit again this year.
Looking to have fun in 2014.

2013 – What a Wargaming Year
What a fantastic year of gaming I have had. 84 miniatures games and 5 board games – by far
and away the busiest year for a very very long time.
This has included playing games at 17 different places – although obviously
most at the Falkirk club I also visited
Washington, Dunbarton and Grimsby and played a round of the Scottish Impetus
circuit at the Dunfirmline club
Games played at shows were at Vapnartak, Salute, Claymore and Targe
This year we got involved in putting games on for the public at the
National Museum of Scotland, National Museum of Flight, Kinneal estate (Falkirk’s
Big Roman Week) and the Culloden Visitor Centre.
Last but not least were games with Richard in Scone, Tim in Mid Calder,
a game at Frank’s shop (Worlds at War) in Craighalls and even some games at
home with a couple of visits from Brian.
The games at the Falkirk club included three Sunday games sessions, two
of which were Impetus competitions and the third a joint event with the Society
of Twentieth Century Wargamers. We of course also hosted the Carronade show
which continues to go from strength to strength.
The 84 miniature games were spread over 30 different rule sets and all
the board games were different.
I have had an absolute blast gaming in 2013.
All this activity has been at the expense of longer term projects and
painting. However both the Mordhiem and
Longstreet campaigns have been excellent and I have also enjoyed taking part in
3 Dux Britanniarum campaigns as well.
The blog has gone pretty well, the only downside being that it can
gobble up more time than I would really like it to.
I will post up my plans for 2014 in a few days time but 2013 will be a
very hard year to beat!

November Targets
The plan was to paint – I failed miserably.

Mutineer Miniatures
http://www.mutineer-miniatures.org.uk/
Another friends' wargaming business, actually three of them all Falkirk club members.
Their Indian Mutineer 28mm figures are excellent and I think their 20mm moderns deserve to be better known.
They have a 25% off Christmas sale on figures at the moment so I thought that this was a good time to give them a mention.
Oh they also do tufts that always seem to go down a storm at shows
