A picture!

Thanks to Rory who took a picture of my game and sent me a copy.  His game of Impetus is reported here http://albatwowarblog.blogspot.com/2012/03/impetus-bash-berber-wip-take-on.html

My Palmyrans are the ones on the bright green bases.  You can see the three light cavalry units round the back of the Anglo Danish line with the cataphracts engaging at the top of the picture and my archers holding the centre.

I use sabot bases for Impetus which means all my motley crew are aviable for selection, no matter what basing system they are currently on.

This will probably be my last post for a few days but "I shall return"

Camera shy Iron Men on Iron Horses Trample their Foes

I forgot my camera again so no pictures

I managed to win a game of Impetus on Monday using Palmyran against Anglo Danish.  I find infantry armies have a tough time against cavalry with these rules.  I put my light cavalry on the flanks where I was able to cause my opponent a fair bit of bother and then smashed my 4 units of Cataphracts into his left.

I was actually quite nervous taking on large units of long spear in shieldwall but the dice gods smiled on me rather than my opponent so victory was mine.

That was my last game at Falkirk for a week or two, although I hope to get a couple of other games in on my travels.  I'm up to 10 games now so a bit behind the pace if I am going to get up to 70 but there is still time to catch up.

The First Battle of Cimolia 458 BC

I had an hours drive for a game this Friday evening, but it was well worth it.  We were recreating one of the first battles of the Peloponnesian Wars, between Corinth on the one hand and Athens and Megara on the other.  I am putting together an article for Slingshot covering this and the second battle on the same site which followed a few days later, so this is post is a bit of a tease

The armies face off, Richard's Corinthians on the left with my Megarans nearest the camera with the Athenians on their right

The Corinthian Battle Line

The Allies advance

The Corinthians overlap the left flank of the Magarans

The Corinthian left flank skirmishers put up stout resistance

The Athenians push forward

The Corinthians push back

The Megarans look to be in a bit of trouble

The Athenian general attempts to rally one of his units

It is possible that you may be able to deduce the outcome!  Great game, well worth the trip - looking forward to the second round.

Hold the Front Page

It is the first of March so an appropriate day for me to dip a brush into a paint pot and apply colour to a figure for the first time this year!  I did say that 600 on the table in 2012 was going to be a bit of a stretch didn't I.

However I do have a cunning plan to make up at least some of the shortfall.  One of my friends (another David) has been painting up a 15mm WSS Dutch army for me.  He had already done 4 x 24 man units of foot and the other day he handed over another three such units, plus artillery and generals - all in all 97 figures.  Much appreciated David, and a good start to this years target.

Once I get into a rhythm I can get up to 10 25mm figures a week painted so now its not so cold up in the attic I hope to make some progress of my own.

I do enjoy seeing the end result when I've done some painting but I would always much rather play than paint.  Anyway I have my first non Falkirk game of the year tomorrow so am looking forward to that.  Watch this space - I must remember to pack the camera.
